The president of The Generalitat of Catalonia, Pere Aragones, has been furious since The Citizen Lab, a laboratory of the Munk School at the University of Toronto, revealed in April that at least 60 independence activists had been spied on using the Israeli software Pegasus. Paz Esteban, the director of the National Intelligence Center, admitted the use of Pegasus in the case of 18 Catalan activists, but justified it by explaining to the Congressional Official Secrets Committee that these wiretaps had taken place with a judicial authorization.
